Animal Life In Antarctica
Draft Information Report
Killer Whale
(Orca)
The killer whale is a toothed whale unlike the baleen whale. The orca use’s it’s sharp teeth to help catch and eat prey. Killer whales eat fish, krill, penguin, seals, dolphins other whales and the largest animal that has lived on Earth the blue whale! When an orca has attacked it has little chance of escape.
When a killer whale is born it stays with the group of killer whales it was born with for the rest of it’s life. A group of orcas is called a pod. Pods were thought to migrate during winter but have been seen during winter.Baby orcas have also been seen during winter which means orcas might even bread during winter. Orcas have a population of 70 000.
When baby’s are born it’s parents take different jobs. The male takes the more dangerous jobs of attacking the more harsh prey. The female would teach the young ones how to attack their prey.
Adelie Penguin
(Pygoscelis Adeliae)
Adelie penguins breed all around Antarctica’s coast where there is exposed rock. They make there nests out of small rocks. Adelie penguins lay two eggs and raise two chicks. They start to breed at about 3-5 of age. Adelie penguins die at the age of 20. Adults that are breeding can travel between 5 and 120 km to catch food for their chicks. They breed during October and March.
Adelie penguins mainly eat krill but also eat fish, squid and crustaceans. They travel all around the icy region but always stay at Antarctica. The adelie penguin can dive 175metres deep to catch their food.
Leopard Seal
(Hydrurga leptonyx)
Leopard seals favorite food is penguins but also eat smaller seals, fish, squid and crustaceans. Some leopard seals hide around groups of penguins so they can eat them. The only animal that eats the leopard seal is the killer whale.
The leopard seal is the second largest seal in Antarctica after the elephant seal. Males are usually smaller than the females. Males usually weigh 320kg and can be 2.8metres long. The females can weigh 370kg and be 3metres long. A big female can weigh 500kg and be 3.5metres long. A pup can weigh 30kg.

Antarctic treaty
Antarctic Treaty
Antarctica is located at the bottom of the globe it is the coldest continent on earth. The lowest temperature ever recorded was -129oC.
On the first of December 1959 12 countries including Australia America and France signed the Antarctic treaty. It was written in Russian, French, English and Spanish.
The Antarctic treaty and related agreements together called the Antarctic treaty system or ATS, organize international relations with respect to Antarctica, earths only continent without native human population. For the purposes of the treaty system, Antarctica is designed as all land and ice shelves south of 60oC in attitude. The treaty has now been signed by forty four different countries.
Over fifty years ago people decided to help each other to get more information about the treaty. The Antarctic treaty looks after the animals. When everyone shaves Antarctica they don’t sight over it as well they shave each other’s information. People keep trying to find more information on Antarctica.
Antarctica is dived into lots of pieces like a cake. Antarctica is a peaceful place to stay and it should stay like that forever. Seven countries that signed that treaty made a clam on Antarctica’s land.
The Antarctic treaty has many aims. It states that it is a peaceful place, there should be no interruption or conflict and there should be no weapons.
The ATS held a meeting every year until 1993. After 1993, meetings where held more often. The meetings discuss advice about the operation of the treaty.
In conclusion, the Antarctic treaty is important because of the preserves and conserves in Antarctica.

Antarctica
Antarctica is one of the most coldest continents in the world.
The first person ever to reach Antarctica was a man called Carsten Edgeberg , he was also the first man ever to step foot on Antarctica .Captain James cook is best known for discovering Australia , but he was also the first ever man to cross the arctic circle. Cooks voyage lasted for 3 years!
The most famous explorer is Sir Ernest. Everyone should know that Antarctica is the most windiest, highest and driest place of all , it is dry because all of the water is frozen.
In ancient times, Antarctica was known as “ Terra Australias incognita’’ that means “unknown southern land’’. This was thought of by the Greeks .
Some temperatures can get really high and some can get really low .The lowest temperature is -19 degrease C.
The highest wind speed in Antarctica is 5 meters per sec . Antarctica is Antarctica is much more colder than the north pole.
In the mid 18th century, only some scientist believed that the earth was once covered in ice.
Antarctica is a really peaceful place so lets try to save it.
